Course Description:
This course is structured for the tradesperson who is just entering the field, or for the person that is transitioning into a position that requires a good understanding of how construction documents are related to each other. The class will also demonstrate how the different disciplines correlate with other trades.

This is a 5-series course (one night per week for 5 weeks) for 3 hours each night.

Learning Objectives:
-Demonstrate an understanding of the how to read and understand the various forms of construction documents.

-Analyze drawings of the various trade disciplines and see how information is referenced throughout a set of Construction Documents.

-Understand the inter-relationship between the various disciplines included in sets of Construction Documents (blueprints) from a simple duplex through a more complicated school addition.

-Discuss how inconsistencies are treated in construction documents.

Week 1 – Overview of the Construction Documents, Terminology, Site plans

Week 2 – Site plans (cont'd), Foundations, Building Framing

Week 3 – Framing (cont'd), Building Enclosure, Partitioning

Week 4 – Interior Finishing, Chasing the Details

Week 5 – Plumbing, Mechanical & Electrical plans, Specifications, Bid Manuals

*Each class will begin with a review of the previous week’s lesson to validate what was learned in the previous class.

Instructor
Keith Vandenbergh, Former Director of Estimating at Erhardt Construction

Keith has over 38 years of construction experience since graduating from Lake Superior State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology - Construction. He has worked in positions from Field Engineer up to his most recent position as Director of Estimating for Erhardt Construction before retiring. Keith was responsible for estimating activities through all phases of pre-construction and construction from the earliest through the final assembly of the Guaranteed Maximum Price. Keith’s success has been reinforced by his thorough understanding of the various types of construction documents and their relationships to each other.
